BMXWA – Auscycling update
BMXWA Facebook post November 2019
I imagine that by now you will be aware of the flurry of social media posts regarding voting of the proposed AusCycling merger of BMX, Cycling and Mountain Biking which has resulted in some confusion amongst the members.
From the outset, BMXWA has not been opposed to the concept of a single brand for the three cycling disciplines. However, the process to date has been nothing more than a railroading traveling circus exercise where states/territories of BMX and Cycling Australia have been told it is the unitary model or nothing else. There has been no meaningful discussions or consideration of alternate models, such as a federated model where we all operate individually under the “one banner”.
The steering committee for AusCycling will tell you that they have engaged and consulted with the States/Territories. What they won’t say is that it took BMXWA 12 months to get answers to questions put to BMXA or a copy of the Ernst & Young Report, which was only forthcoming after a freedom of Information Request. Further, we have been advise directly by the Minister for Sport and Recreation that all current funding providing to BMXWA and WestCycle will not be provided to a new entity based in the eastern states.
In this regard, it is unacceptable for BMXWA to hand over all of its assets to the new AusCycling Company, based in the eastern states, in return for a reduction in vote value where NSW, Queensland and Victoria can individually out-vote WA Clubs 2:1. Currently the value of our vote is an equal 1/8th but under the new model individual clubs will get approximately 0.2% of the vote. This diminishes the ability for members to hold the new AusCycling Board accountable.
Further, the AusCycling proposal is devoid of any business plan, strategic plan, marketing plan or budget. Accordingly, how can we take a “leap of faith” in a company that is unable to articulate how it proposes to gain new sponsorship deals under the proposed Unitary Model or why alternate models cannot achieve the same result.
BMXWA has not proposed to call a Special General Meeting for a vote on the merger until such time that the proposed AusCycling constitution is amended from its current form.
This has been supported by the majority of clubs at the general meetings.
It should also be noted that only a 75% majority vote of the 20 WA member clubs in support of the proposed merger will result in BMXWA being dissolved. That said, the Board is exploring alternate models with WestCycle in the event that BMXA is dissolved and subsequently subsumed into AusCycling such that our riders are not disadvantaged at a National level.
I encourage you to read the attached correspondence from our State Minister for Sport and our timeline of events.
