AN 18-year-old champion BMX rider has died in a motorcycle crash in the street where he lived.

Jamie Welhan died from head injuries when he crashed his motorbike about 9pm on Friday on Steere St in the South-West town of Collie.

The tragedy rocked the small coal-mining town, which has a terrible history of road fatalities.

A police spokesman said it appeared a car had also been involved and an investigation was being held.

Mr Welhan was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, police said.

Younger brother Brent, 17, told The Sunday Times that Mr Welhan had won 10 consecutive state BMX titles. He described him as a "bit of a wild child" with a heart of gold.

"He had been interested in bikes since he was two years old," Brent said. "He lived to ride."

He said Mr Welhan was a loyal friend and part of a close-knit family.

"He looked after his mates and younger brother," he said. "Jamie had a lot of love for his family and his mum and dad."

Mr Welhan's sister, Stacey Malatesta, said it was tragic that her brother's life had been cut short. "He was a fun-loving and great guy who was taken far too soon," she said.

Mrs Malatesta said her brother recently finished a bricklaying apprenticeship.

Website WestOz BMX last night paid tribute to a "fallen soldier".

"Jamie Welhan may not have ridden much any more, but he and his family were heavily influential on the BMX scene in Collie," the tribute said.

"If you raced the track, if you rode White Hills back in the day, if you rode R18 recently, know that a Welhan has had a hand in making this happen."

Friends poured out their grief on social networking site Facebook within hours of hearing of the death.

Court Bishop described Mr Welhan as a great guy and close friend.

"It doesn't seem real but it's the way it's gone," she posted. "Why so young did u have to go?

Collie police want anyone with information about the crash to phone 131 444.

Tony Hancox [ THUD Industries Coaching] would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the riders who have poured blood, sweat and tears in their preparation and results at the WA State Titles on the weekend. For all our riders, i am very proud of each and every rider that particpated. Your sportsmanship and conduct make a coach feel like he has done his job.

If my riders hadn't shown dedication and love of the sport, i don't feel we would have got the 42 state plates that we did.7 of them being State Number 1 and 5 State Number 2. That's right, 42 riders made State finals and in some cases, scored their FIRST ever state plate. Congratulations again.

Regardless of who coached who, results show that structured coaching sessions and mentoring by higher profile riders definately makes a difference in not only how our kids perceive the sport but also how they perform. I encourage all parents to contact their local club and see what coaching structure they have in place and start a plan for next years National Titles in Perth.

Thanking you

Tony Hancox

Wednesday 16th April 2008

Day 1 of competition had to be cancelled late Wednesday after events were unable to get started due to serious issues with the construction of the start ramp and it approaches.

Early in the day the event was modified to try and get racing underway to comprise of 2 motos and Finals. However as the hours ticked by it was becoming more and more difficult to proceed with the 700 plus nominations pre title event.

Around 4pm the days proceedings were called off and the Thursday and Friday programs were modified. It was planned that the pre title event would proceed on Thursday and the Cruiser National titles were moved to Friday with the Probikx / Champbikx event. he pre title event will now comprise of 3 motos only.
